SIAT Guitar Hero Night!

Yes, it really happened. Yes, I have a picture to prove it. No, I didn't get a waiver to show this paparazzi picture of these heroic rockers on my website. I'm doing it to try and get some web traffic. When everyone hears that I have an exclusive photo, the masses are going to swarm my site. I may need a web farm, er... maybe a zoo.

This was my first time playing Guitar Hero and I felt pretty good about my performance. Back in the green room after the show there was food and libations and all were merry so I assume all enjoyed the evening. I think about 10 or 11 showed up for the event. Stay tuned for your opportunity to rock the house in the coming months!!!

U.S. Immigration to Canada for Students

This post will eventually hold information about some of the issues related to US immigration to Canada. I realized that by not posting entries which I thought were chronologically important that I was preventing myself from posting current entries. So I'm going to drop in a bunch of placeholders.

Study Permit (Don't need a Visa if coming from the US)

Proof of Financial Solvency
Acceptance Letter from the school
Passport

Importation of Automobile

Letter of authorization from leinholder or Title
Insurance for Canada

Some US insurers will insure in Canada until the end of the policy but cannot renew after that

Employment in Canada

Do not need a work permit to work at the University you are attending or in research positions for faculty of that university
Need a work permit or permanent residency to work outside the university

This is the first post in my SIAT blog and I'll begin with my drive to Vancouver from San Francisco. This blog will remain a personal outlet but will ultimately be more of a trace of my graduate program. Posts will tend toward the technical or exhibitive focused on my work and progress toward my Master's degree from the School of Interactive Arts and Technology. These first few posts are written just over a month past the date of the events.

The drive was pretty casual. Dave Kaminsky and I took off fairly early on Saturday morning (6am) and arrived at Casey's house in Portland, OR in the early evening. This gave us the opportunity to take in a bit of the Portland 'nightlife'.

When we woke at 6am the next morning, all were not in the best of shape to head to breakfast. Fortunately the drivers had curtailed their festivities of the previous night enough to kick it right in gear.

We arrived at customs in the early afternoon. I handed over my paperwork and was swiftly given a student permit from immigration. The customs folks wanted to see documentation that the leinholder on my car had approved my visit to Canada but didn't hold me up when I couldn't produce this.

We sailed into Vancouver by mid-afternoon and headed down to Commercial Drive for a beer while we waited for my landlord to show up with the keys. I had arrived!
